Most smaller local pet stores (Like Ours) have been forced out of business by the larger chain stores. The University of Virginia and Trout Unlimited are seeking help with a mission to study Virginia’s trout streams.
The Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study will cover 458 stream sites in 34 counties, making it among the largest-scale such surveys going in the U.S., according to the study’s organizers.
Team members will sample the streams during the last full week of April, taking water samples that will be tested for pH levels, a measurement that can determine a stream’s ability to neutralize acidity.
High levels of acidity can kill stream life, including native brook trout. This is the third year for the large survey. Previous surveys were conducted in 1987 and 2000, and organizers hope to repeat the study every 10 years.

This nice brown trout was caught by a gentelman named Dennis from Bedford. He caught the trout on Heritage Day while fishing in Roanoke City’s Tinker Creek. He caught this fish using a small grub jig (white).
